Is it ok to give a younger dog senior dog food?

Question by cwant88: Is it ok to give a younger dog senior dog food?

I have two dachshunds. One is almost 10 years old and the other is a little older than 1 year. We give the older dog Victor Senior Health Formula/Healthy Weight with glucosamine. We were giving the younger dog a different kind of food, but each dog ended up just eating the other’s food, so we started letting them both have the senior health food. Is there any downside to giving a 1 year old dog senior health food. Would there be any nutrients she needs that she isn’t receiving in this food? She is a little chunky butt, so I thing the healthy weight would benefit her.

If the dog’s fat, you feed less and exercise more. The info from my vet is that “senior” food really isn’t good for seniors because they have to eat more to get the nutrition they need, their kidneys have to work harder, making the better solution just plain feeding less. And that glucosamine in the food? It’s been processed at high heat, the quantities are way too small to do any good, so its a waste of money. Owners know they still have to supplement with glucosamine chondroitin and salmon oil.
