Q&A: How can I get my new rescue dog to play with our other dog at home?

Question by Katie: How can I get my new rescue dog to play with our other dog at home?

We picked up a rescue dog recently — 4.5 year old MinPin/Pomeranian Mix. He’s a really sweet dog, abandoned by his previous owners. We were hoping that when we brought him home, after adjusting to his new surroundings, that he would act as a great playmate for our 2 year old Chihuahua/Bichon cross. They get along fine, but whenever our younger dog tries to play with him he backs away. When our younger dog comes up to the rescue dog he will drop his toy and let the younger dog have it… very submissive behaviour. Part of it seems like a dominance/confidence issue, but it also seems like this dog doesn’t know how to play with other dogs. Sometimes he will get really excited when the other dog is trying to get him to play, but then after a short time will just back away and stop. Any tips or advice?
